Dear Ted, I am curious about your take on personal defense weapons and loads. I know you are a fan of the Glocks but, do you use JHP's or what?

The best defense weapon, like the best hunting weapon, is always going to be the gun we are most adept and proficient with. Familiarity, feel, tactical balance, reasonable concealability and accuracy all play dynamic roles that spell the difference between success and failure. In a self defense scenario, it can mean life over death, so make your choice carefully and practice diligently. You will know which type, make, model and caliber to chose after you experiment and train with your preferred gun. I have experimented extensively with nearly every imaginable handgun, and have come to absolutely love my Glock Model 20 in 10mm.

Dear Ted: I would like to ask you your opinion on what type of handgun you would recommend. The main purpose would be carry and home defense. I have had revolvers but am now looking at semiautomatics. Something in a 40 cal. I think would be best. What do you think?

I carry the ever reliable, fantastically accurate Glock Model 20 in 10mm, in which I can load .40 ammunition without a worry. The key is dedicated practice. Shootemup!!

I'm shopping for my first hand gun. What I am looking for is something that can serve two purposes; 1) to hunt does during the extended doe only season in my home county. 2) to protect my family and my home. Can you offer me some advice??? Thank You!

Go with the 44 mag, that way you can hunt anything & use lite 44 special loads for self defense. I like the S&W 29 & 629, Dan Wesson, Ruger, Taurus & Freedon Arms, Practice as much as you possibly can with the ammo you plan to use!! Goodluck!! BloodBrothers, Ted

Would you recommend a .223 or a 6mm for a 13 year old?

I am looking for a varmint rifle for coyotes and fox, it will just be around Michigan so I don't really need a long range gun. I was wondering if you might have any suggestions about what caliber would be best or what brand to buy.

I luv my .22-250 Remington 700, but I'd go with my Browning Stalker .243 BAR cuz I can use it for deer & bear too. Lotsa great scopes out there. Try the Leupold 3.5X10. Practice lots & squeeeeeeze!!

I own a Ruger Super Redhawk and have recently added a Leupold ER scope. I currently use it for target shooting and am interested in hunting elk with it. At what maximum range would you feel comfortable trying to take an elk with this gun and a 240gr slug? I am very proficient with the gun (2-inch groups off-hand at 25 yards - without the scope) but I want to pick my shot wisely.

I'd use the CorBon (www.corbon.com) 265gr penetrator. I've killed huge elk at more than 100 yds using an open sight S&W29 6" with Remington 240 SP, but the CorBon is best. Its all about intense, diligent, intelligent practice, practice, practice. Blow up a lot of ammo at all ranges you want to shoot at & know your limitations. The mighty Ruger will do it out to 200 yds + if you can!! Goodluck.

What's your take on so called "assault rifles", do you like `em-----which is you favorite and why??????

There is no such thing as an assault rifle. there are only rifles. how they are employed is a function of the bearer of such arms. I personally luv all guns, I own & enjoy every imaginable type & they are all used as recreational, sporting & self defense arms, Ted

Dear Uncle Ted, I am looking for a rifle to hunt North of Texas, I currently hunt with a Marlin 30/30 Lever action,(long barrel). Been happy with it since its an excellent "brush gun" for West and South Texas White tail. I have narrowed it down to either a 7 mag or 300 win mag. Any suggestions?

I luv the mighty 30-30, but there are so many superior calibers & actions that better suit most hunting particularly TX hunting. Get yourself a quality bolt action in .243, 7mm08, 25-06 or any of the mid cals like those. The whole Nuge fmaily has come to really appreciate these calibers for control & marxmanship upgrade. Good deals can get ya a world class rifle from Remington, Winchester, Browning, Savage, Kimber & many others that will last a lifetime. Be sure to mount a quality scope with good magnification. I like the 40mm + tubes with 3x10 or 4x12 power for overall utility. Leupold, Nikon, Bushnell, Sheperd, Burris, Weaver, Tasco, they're all great!! Goodluck & good hunting. BloodBrothers, Ted

I recently got turned on to 10mm and carry a Glock 20c every day but with the barrel replaced to a 5.3 inch. I am getting 1430fps with Georgia Arms 155 grain Gold Dot, and 1236fps from Georgia Arms 180s. I want to start loading for hunting Boar. What do you recommend for ammo? A 200 grain XTP? Or a 180 Gold Dot? What do you carry for ammo for defense? Thanks. Robert -Marshfield, MA.

In case you haven't heard, some fruitcake with a rifle (.243 caliber I believe) has been picking off innocent people in the tri-state area. The sick S.O.B. even shot a 13 -year old at school. Worse yet, some nut-job in local media blamed the NRA. I was wondering what your take is on this and what would be a good response for the media-sympathizers around here.

I am gonna purchase a rifle and am still undecided which to get, an auto matis or a bolt action? People at work say an automatic loses power compared to a bolt action. Can you give me some input? Also, what do you prefer in scopes; over and unders or a scope mounted right to the gun? Thank you-Ken

Bolts autos pumps levers, they're all great!! Get one that FEELS right in your hands. Get a .243 with a Leoupold 3.5X10 4plex scope!! PRACTICE with all ya got! goodluck!

I'm a 16 year old Minnesota boy and deer season is coming up. I have two rifles that I have used in the past, and I am now trying to decide which one I should use; a bolt action 260 rem. or 30-06 semi-auto rem. Which one should I use?

My son Lucas has just turned three this past Sept. and needless to say he is showing an accute interest in firearms and the bow/arrow. I remember on your radio show [sorely missed by the way] you spoke of starting firearm training at very early ages to those who could, but what about the bow? I've got the opportunity to purchase a used Mossberg 500 20 ga. from a co-worker. Should I take the gun directly to a gun-smith to have it inspected so I don't get shafted? Is Mossberg as good a brand of shotgun as Remington or Winchester? J.B., Manchester, Ia.

I may soon be purchasing a hand gun, and have been eyeballing the Glocks, Model 20, and 29. I see that they make the model 20c, do you know if they plan on making the 29 in a "c" version? Should I even worry about the recoil, it can't be any worse than an Israile Arms 50 cal. Desert Eagle, can it???? Sincerely Dan "dano" O'Connor

I plan on hunting feral hogs and the area I will be hunting is a military base and does not allow centerfire rifles. I have a 20 ga. and a 12 ga. both without scopes or slug barrels and I don't feel comfortable using them as they are not very accurate. I was wondering if a .22 mag with full metal jacket rounds would be enough. I believe that shot placement is 90% of a good clean kill. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you're an absolute sniper marxman & can definately hit the hog in the brain perfectly everytime a .22 mag will work. But that's alot of demanding ultra precision shooting!! You'd be much better off using a bow &/or rifled shotgun that you perfect.

Dear Ted, I have been using a .243 savage for deer hunting all my life. It gets the job done, but do you think it would be wise to switch to a more powerful gun? I am only 15 . What would you do? Go to the higher power or stay with what works?Jordan (pa)
