With everything going into growing bigger racks, please give some insight why deer loose their racks.

If I had been God, I would have simply created deer to never drop their antlers and just grow em bigger and bigger every year just to scare deerhunters. But alas, it shant be. The process of herbivores like deer, elk, moose, and caribous losing their headgear every year is truly a phenomena of life. But each year, these fascinating critters do indeed drop and regrow this amazing crown of boney hair & protein that has had such a powerful even mystical hold on mankind. The strain on a bull elk or a moose to channel the necessary protein to regrow these massive antlers even baffles scientists. This is why landowners and hunters invest so much in providing supplemental minerals and protein to insure and even enhance maximum growth during critical spring and summer time periods. I recommend DeerCrack, Hard Hunter, Temptation blocks, AntlerKing, Mossy Oak BioLogic, Whitetail Institute Enhance and all the other products on the market to upgrade the quality of the overall deer's health out there. Goodluck connecting with the beast.

Hey Ted, We have 300 acres in Eastern NC that we recently leased. During our bow and muzzleloader season we saw about 17 does and about five bucks. Since gun season, we've only seen two bucks and no does. Where have all the does gone? Does the moon play that much of a part of their movement? I think the bucks are moving at night as we're always finding new rubs and some scrapes are starting to appear. Any tips on managing this tract of land?

300 acres can provide a wonderful hi-quality hunting experience for you & your buddies as long as you balance the pressure you put on the property. I would say that depending on the type of habitat there, up to 10 hunters could have at it, as long as you hunt small and hunt smart. Not knowing the depth of escape and hideout cover habitat there, I would guess you have experienced what most of us do when the increased pressure of gun season erupts all around. Somewhere nearby, there is a hellhole or series of hellholes that the majority of deer head into when the pressure is on. However, do not underestimate the resourcefulness of cagey whitetails, for they can disappear in the minutest of thick cover not much bigger than a tabletop if they can get away with it. Cutting 3-5 acre blocks of mature timber, thereby allowing ultra thick regrowth, will create prime hideaway cover on your ground, and as long as you don't push it, the deer will use it. It is near these heaviest of zones that a patient hunter can ambush a sneaky buck looking to put the slip on us. I would also highly recommend the addition of fertilized and Mossy Oak BioLogic seeded areas wherever possible to provide consistent attractants for the deer as well. There is so much we can do to optimize the holding capacity of our hunting land. Subscribe to Ted Nugent Adventure Outdoors magazine for ongoing tips that will help. Goodluck & good hunting.

Mr. Nugent-I would like to get some information on scouting in the pre-season. I would like to find out how to find and to seek deer in the preseason for hunting that area in the hunting seasons. Thank you for your time.

Preseason scouting cannot be overemphasized NH. In fact a very exciting and intensely anticipated extension of my beloved hunting seasons, my favorite scouting period is the winter immediately following the actual hunting time. With vegetation all but gone, trails and most importantly, those nearly invisible parallel buck trails are more obvious than at any other time. I take notes and even video these roadmaps for review just prior to the next years hunt. You'd be amazed what a guy can learn from off season scouting. Take a video camera and a notepad and hunt the sign now and anytime you can for next fall.

Dear Ted, I have been reading comments on the tednugent.com TalkBack board about this whole issue over Ducks Unlimited not supporting hunters. I have already noticed one person not joining D.U. because of these postings. I, to, have an envelope and check for a D.U. membership ready to go, but I admit that I am now second guessing it. I don't want to support or back an organization that doesn't have the correct intentions, Smith and Wesson being one of such. I can see where D.U. would not want to take a side with hunters or non, and concern themselves with habitat conservation only, but is that good position to take? I understand that you are a member also, is this correct? I value your opinion greatly and am sending this by e-mail so as not to put my question "on parade." My question is do you recommend supporting D.U. and why? I would be very appreciative if you could send an answer "through the grapevine" at some point. Until then, I will hold off from mailing the membership registration. Thank you for reviewing my letter.

It is true that DU, like NWTF, RMEF, FNAWS and many other dedicated wildlife conservation groups put their primary focus on strictly habitat concerns. I support them all and you should support all you possibly can. That being said, I hope others like you will join with me to apply courteous pressure on these groups to begin to fight the antihunters and antigunners who represent as much a threat to wildlife and our hunting rights as do the curses of urban sprawl and runaway development. But the ultimate system to gain upgrade is certainly from within. As birthday and holiday gifts, sign up everyone you know into TNUSA and other groups to increase the voice and warchest.

I am doing a research paper on the preservation of hunters rights and I was wondering what you think could be done to preserve hunters rights and what hunters do to make the great outdoors a better place.

My first recommendation in this cultural war against hunting and 2nd Amendment rights is to join TNUSA (800-343-4868) and the NRA. Every issue of these two organizational magazines is full of pertinent data to prepare you to promote the truth. My NY Times Best Seller book, GOD, GUNS & ROCK-N-ROLL, I review this pivotal American issue in great detail. Upgrade will come from "we the people," nowhere else.

Dear Mr. Nuge, I would be interested in your thoughts and comments re. the possible threat or danger of the recent development of the cow/bovine disease to wildlife nationwide, as well as our domestic beef stock. This seems like it would be of great interest/concern to yourself. Any plans by TNUSA to address this subject and any help possible by we your followers? Thanks, Rock On.

Certainly with more than two million foodborn illnesses each year in America resulting in thousands of unnecessary deaths, we must all be cognizant of the importance of demanding quality sustenance in our everyday diet. That's one of my primary reasons for hunting and butchering my own food, I insist on knowing exactly from where and how my meat got to the Nugent grill. Though E-coli and salmonella are nearly unheard of in wild game flesh, growing episodes of chronic wasting disease and other such maladies are occurring in some western states' deer and elk herds. With but a modicum of research and common sense, we can surely surmise how insane some of the longrunning agriculture practices have been. No farmer or rancher worth diddly would ever think of feeding any dead livestock back to his herd. This practice and others like it must end in the USA. Hunters should initiate a nationwide promotional campaign celebrating the purity of our hands-on hunting lifestyle as the ultimate healthy system by which mankind responsibly procures our families' sustenance while creating a balanced ecosystem that benefits all living things.

I have a hunting question. I shoot a Model 70 Winchester .308 with Nosler ballistic tip bullets. I mainly hunt deer and pig and handload my ammunition. I am trying to find a happy medium between the accuracy of my slower loads and the energy of my faster loads. With that in mind, how much energy, in ft/lbs, is required to take down a deer sized animal weighing 100 to 300lbs for any given distance?

Pigs & deer don't take much killing beyond simple 30-30 power. Any energy delivery in the same basic neighborhood as your standard 243 70 gr & up @ 3000fps & up can bring home the bacon everytime. IF you put the bullet where it belongs!! My sons & I shoot 243 95gr Win loads @ 3300fps & its kills like lightning! goodluck, BloodBrothers, TED

Nuge, I am 13 years old and went squirrel hunting with my uncle. He gutted the squirrels different. He swung them around and then "pumped" the insides out. he never opened the game. Everything came out the "back end." I don't want to eat the squirrels because I am afraid something could have broke inside and get on the meat (ex. liver), my uncle said its unlikely my dad talked to many experienced hunters and they agree with me what would you do?

Sure sounds like a strange field dressing system to me, but if your uncle eats em like that, go for it! I prefer to gut em thoroughly rinse em real clean & grill em on hot coals. Our new book KILL IT & GRILL IT will be out soon with our Nugent family squirrel & other game systems!! Godbless, BloodBrothers, Ted

I'm a cattle rancher, wheat farmer and avid whitetail hunter from texas. I'm very much against all these high fences now getting so popular in texas. Please tell me what you think about high fences and if you approve of them or disapprove and if you have or would ever hunt a high fenced ranch.

I own no land in TX yet but hunt many hi fence & no fence lands. Each one must be evaluated for the fairchase quality hunt they provide & I'm all for those that qualify. Godbless TX, BloodBrothers, Ted

Is Charles J. Alsheimer a "true Outdoorsman"? I ask this because, after reading your article, I was thumbing through the rest of the magazine, and he has pictures of "staged shots", which I'm sure were not taken in "Wild/Natural" conditions! Why would someone take these "Un-natural" pictures and present them to the public in a miss-leading manner? I've also noticed in the many past issues of the wonderful publication, that it appears he uses "Model Deer"! Does he have some penned in Pope & Young deer somewhere, and take roll after roll of pictures of these same deer? I don't know why this bothers me so, but it just seems to be so fake!

Be very careful not to think the worse of our fellow sporters. CH is a dedicated hunter & great pro outdoor writer & photog that just happens to have access to some amazing game property that is not hunted with amazing deer that are quite calm. He goes to GREAT effort to attain those amazing photos & I for one salute him!! Godbless Godspeed, BloodBrothers, Ted

Hey ted im a big fan of yours I tape every show I think its cool that you hunt with your family. I'm trying to get my wife to start hunting too. I'm 33 years old. Do you think I'm to old to start hunting with a bow? Do you still shoot Dartin? Which arrow size do you shoot to use the Nugent blade brodhead? Do you practice with the same brodhead you hunt with?

Hunting is always wonderful, but hunting with the family is the ultimate! Youre never too old to start bowhunting, believe me. There are so many quality bows out there that is all a matter of "feel". Go with a lightweight bow. I really like the Renegade bows. I shoot a smooth 53 pounds. Be sure to match your arrows to your draw length & weight. I practice with my Nugent Blade heads then resharpen them for hunting. I hope to see ya in The Sportsmens Paradise sometime!! Godbless, BloodBrothers, Ted

What are your thoughts on Quality Deer Management?

TNUSA policy on deer hunting coincides with the basic premise of Quality Deer Mgt. We are for QUALITY upgrade for all hunt fish trap shoot RTKABA ops. TNUSA is for optimal access to optimum outdoor opportunities. We believe deer harvest within the law should be an individual choice, but we intensely encourage all sporters to pass on button bucks & even younger antlered bucks wherever possible & when advantageous to the overall herd balance in conjunction with adequate doe harvest. We own 40 acres in Upper Michigan near Watersmeet. We are very concerned about the Chronic Wasting disease in Wisconsin (where we live). The Associated Press had an article about sharpshooters that were going to kill 15,000 deer near the Madison area (Richland Center) in Wisconsin. Are you aware of how Upper Michigan is affected by this?

CWD is very serious concern across America. Studies are ongoing & we will have more reports in TNAO magazine & on tednugent.com regularly. Be sure to communicate with your regional DNR for updates. Goodluck & Godbless, BloodBrothers, Ted

I've enjoyed your show for the past year and would like to hear why you hunt solely with a two blade broadhead. It's not just a product endorsement for you, but something you use on every hunt. Which is great! I'm fairly new to bow hunting and have been using a three blade broadhead, but want to explore some other set ups prior to this fall. What benefit do you feel a two blade head provides over a three or four blade head?

Thanx much. 2 blade = penetration &optimal kill effect. stick with em! BBT

Hey there brother of the good hunt and keeper of the tradition. I would like to know in general what animals you would think are responsibly viable to take with a 40cal handgun. Im not sure if it would be any use for anything other than varment but i would apreciate your input. My first handgun is a beautiful 96fs stainless Beretta 40 cal. Ikeep my Ninja sword by my bed for self defence and my gun locked in a cabinet and I would like to use it for more than target practice. I live in Iowa. One more thing, I cant say how impressed I am everytime I hear you speak about hunters rights and the second amendment. You seem to bring out so many points that others seem to miss that are very important to proving the God given rights that we enjoy. We are America, lets keep the land and the people as one and free till the end of time. Mike

Thanx Mike. Only maxloads in .40 S&W could be ethically viable for any big game, with precision shot placement at relatively shortrange. In fact, the only load I would endorse would be Peter Pi's CorBon ultra loadings. I have cleanly taken big whitetails & huge wild boar with my Glock M20 in 10mm using his hot .40s. It takes ultra hardcore practice to be sure. Make certain you follow the laws of you area as they pertain to magazine capacity and action. It can be done. Goodluck & good hunting. BloodBrothers, Ted

Dear Ted, I have been an outdoorsman since my early teens. Hunting and fishing are food for my soul. I have never taken the time and effort to learn to use a bow. I'd like to change that as soon as possible. I am intrigued by those hunters that have chosen to forgo all the technology and go back to the roots of hunting by using a simple longbow with wooden arrows. I work in high technology 5 days a week and would like to leave that part of my life behind when I go afield. Is it appropriate for the new archer to choose a traditional longbow rather than a compound bow? Also, I've been reading a great deal about instinct shooting rather than using sights. Is this a good method to learn at the outset? How do I determine the correct length, draw length and draw weight of a longbow for me? Ted, I enjoy The Spirit of the Wild on the Outdoor Channel very much and applaud you for bringing back the spirituality that is in fact the reason we take to the woods. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide. Gary- Vernal, UT

Thanx for the kindwords Gary. The ever Mystical Flight of the Arrow is wonderful & intriguing regardless of equipment choice, I assure you. To each his own really. For example, I mostly shoot a Renegade compound bow, but shoot it the xact same style as my old longbos & recurves; no sights, canted, instinctively. And I crave every xciting arrow no matter which bow I shoot! I recommend starting off with old fashioned equipment because it will help cultivate your natural hand/eye coordination that is so very important to the complete archery xperience. Start with a nice, smooth, easy to shoot lightweight bow around 40 or so pound draw weight so you don't develop bad habits by struggling to shoot gracefully. Take your time, shoot up close to the target around 10-15 paces and concentrate on form & feel. Follow your instincts and enjoy! Goodluck, BloodBrothers, Ted

I will be traveling to northern Ontario in early September. This hunt will be an outfitted black bear and timber wolf hunt. The outfitter has suggested that a very good cover-up scent will be a necessary for any chance of success during our hunt. I am aware that you endorse the Natures Essence products on your television show "Spirit of the Wild". In the past I have experienced numerous successes during archery seasons without the use of spray on cover-up scents. Years ago there were many horror stories told about the use of these products. My intentions are to be prepared for this hunt without overdoing it. Do you believe the use of Scent-Lok clothing will be sufficient during my hunt? With no prior background in using these products do they really work as intended? If you were attending a hunt such as I have described what type of clothing or cover-up chemicals would you choose and why? Brian - Saginaw, MI

ScentLok clothes absolutely work as long as you & all your clothes & gear are ultra clean. I also believe in Nature's Essence- Essence of Fall cover scents & scent eliminator & neutralizer products!! They rock! Call em at 800-423-8007. I'd be sure to silence my bow with Limb Savers &all the proven Sims Vibration Labs accessories as well. Goodluck, BloodBrothers, Ted

Dear Ted, I appreciate everything you stand for us fellow hunters. I hunt on public land and it can sometimes be a bear, especially with other hunters. How do you go about finding private land and asking the owners permission to hunt on their land? Also, I have a Remington 870 Express, Would you recommend a scope or would the rifle sights be good enough for the rifled barrel? Thanks for your time and insight, fellow hunter in Michigan. Ronnie

Thank you Ronnie. We should all fight this cultural war for our American God given rights!! I hope you're a member of the NRA & other progun prohunt groups!! That's job ONE! Ted Nugent United Sportsmen of America developed a surefire system of goodwill in order to gain access to quality private property hunting grounds over 14 years ago based on my system of more than 30 years. Common sense dictates we must earn the privilege of trespass so we should go the xtra mile to impress landowners we deserve such an opportunity. Visit farms & landowners in the spring of the year, neatly groomed, preferably with family in tow, politely requesting permission to view wildlife in the off season & offering to help with chores or other related property management responsibilities. Then no later than midsummer, ask about hunting permission, always emphasizing respect, safety & law. Fill out an ID form providing name, address, drivers license number, vehicle description and personal references to give the landowner confidence in your trust. In this day and age it is not easy, but the most dedicated amongst us should have little problem if we put our heart & soul into it.

The Rem 870 can do it all! I prefer a scope & rifled barrel for optimum accuracy on a shotgun for big game. Be sure to test various slugs as all guns perform differently with different slug loads. Goodluck.

Ted, On one of your Spirit of the Wild shows on the Outdoor Channel a few weeks ago, you were using a 3 blade muzzy. Do you find the blade better than the 4 blade? Thanks, Bob

I find the 2 blade the absolute best, but Muzzy, like so many replaceable blade heads out there, are quality made & function great. Surely 3 is better than 4 under most conditions. When you increase the number of blades, you should increase the poundage of your bow above 65#. Goodluck.

I'm new to bow hunting and I hope you can answer a couple questions. First, do you think there is a big difference between using actual feathers vs. plastic vanes on your arrows? And second, how do you properly determine shaft size (not length)? I have a 28" draw length and it's set at 55#. Tom

Welcome my friend to the BloodBrother Tribe of the Mystical Flight of the Arrow. You are about to enter the ultimate stimuli zone! Say YOWZA!! I much prefer feathers over plastic vanes for optimal flight stabilization as well as aesthetics. The torque & archers paradox created by the release of the arrow must be countered with the proper spined shaft. Easton & others provide basic charts to match weight, draw length, type of bow & style of shooting. It's all very important. Generally speaking, if you shoot a simple cam design at 55# at 28", the charts should be accurate for you. I'd say a 2213 or 2115 aluminum arrow and a 300 designation carbon. Practice alot & enjoy!

However, when I am going about my daily outdoor activities including hunting & see a free ranging dog or cat, I do indeed eliminate them becuz feral animals are a dangerous blight on the land. I bowkilled the majestic prehistoric hoary icebeast near Mekoriuk years ago with Charlie Spud using a NugeBlade by Magnus. My arrow sliced clean thru the Gibrlater-like mamoth. If there were a better killing design than the 2 balde, I assure you, I would use it! Bear, Magnus,. Zwickey, Patriot, G5 & others provide THE best killing penetration to be had. Period. Goodluck, Godbless & Godspeed. Pick a spot & send photos!!

Dear Uncle Ted- I have a 7 year old daughter who expresses a lot of interest in the world of hunting. My wife doesn't feel she is old enough to hunt with me. At what age do you think it's ok to take her hunting. She is very smart for a 7 year old and pays close attention to detail. Thank you! Mark, Ohio

I'm proud your little girl connects with the ol guitar player hunter! How cool is that! 7 is a fine age to baptize a youngster into the great Spirit of the Wild!! My daughter Sasha killed her 1st big Texas whitetail at that age & we had a blast! Be sure to break her in gentle, in easy weather conditions & a gentle time table to keep her comfortable. Take her almost to her limit to teach her self control & discipline but don't make her unnecessarily uncomfortable. Quality time with a BB gun & .22 rifle & handgun at easy close range targets will go far to encourage her. Take the wife under these same gentle conditions too & feel their spirit glow & grow!! Goodluck & let me know how ya all do. Godbless & Godspeed, BloodBrotherz, Ted

Dear Brother Ted, I'm currently booked on a buffalo hunt in North Dakota this winter. I have a 2000 Hoyt MagnaTec, & I shoot carbons tipped with the ever amazing Nugent Blade. Please help me set up my bow with the right draw weight, arrow size, broad head size etc. Thank you for everything you do. A Huge Fan, Chris

I've killed many a buf & guided many kills as well. It is an amazing Spirit of the Wild experience I'd sincerely recommend to everyone. As always, shot placement with a razorsharp 2 blade broadhead is primary. Accuracy is more important than draw weight for sure. I've killed some monsters with 55-65 pound bows with nary a problem. You want to hit the beast as broadside as possible, right where the heavy, gnarly thicker shoulder robe meets the smoother hair behind the massive shoulder. Ignore that huge back hump as all it contains is fat & muscle. Put that NugentBlade 1/3 way up from the bottom, tight behind that shoulder and you've got the spirit of the buffalo all over ya!! Be sure to say a Prayer for the WildThings before, during and after the magic hunt. Goodluck, Godspeed & Godbless The Spirit of the Buffalo!! BloodBrotherz, Ted

The idea of hunting lions fascinates me. Have you ever harvested a lion or taken a known man-eater? If so, what rifle did you use? I hear it takes a hell of a gun to down a lion. I could not imagine a more exciting hunt.

I killed a magnificant African Lion in the Sudan in 1978 with my Browning Safari Grade bolt-action rifle in 7mm Remington Magnum with Remington CoreLokt 175 grain ammo at about 200 yards. Hit square on the shoulder broadside, he dropped like a bag-o-rocks. He did however roar in my face as I approached him from the rear so I touched off a 500 grain softpoint from my Weatherby .460 magnum. That did it. Lions are relatively soft & can certainly be killed easily with a properly placed bullet in even the lightweight calibers like .243 I am sure. Many have been bowkilled & cleanly taken with .357 magnum & .44 magnum handguns. However, it is universally agreed that a .375 H&H magnum is the best lion caliber, again, as long as shot placement is perfect. He will eat you if he can. There are plenty of lions throughtout Africa in their historical habitat. South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, &others offer great lion hunting. Though Botswana supports a healthy, thriving lion population, that country has caved into anithunting zealots & is now losing valuable conservation revenues while dealing with a lion problem. Go figure. Goodluck & may the King of Beasts bring you much spirit.

I saw a recent photo of you wearing ASAT knit camos.I've been searching high and low for these camos. Could you please send me in the right direction? I don't think my set will make it anther season.Carl...

Dear Nuge, This past weekend my step son got his first deer - 6 point buck. We process our own meat and upon removing the hide an old wound was discovered. The wound had infection around it. Then, after we started removing the backstraps, more infection was found around this area. Is the rest of the venison okay to eat? I'm just concerned the deer might not have been well/healthy. Thanks for your help! AND, thanks for you music, and excellent hunting ethics & work! Sincerely, Cristina Hillsboro, MO

Cut all spoiled meat from around any tainted areas & enjoy the rest!! Congrats & Happy ThanXgiving!! BloodBrothers, Ted

Hey Ted, I was just wondering how long it takes you to field dress a deer. Also, do you prefer to dress it hanging up, or on the ground? Logan M in MI TNUSA# 48738

I gut 99% of my deer on the ground, prefer it. It takes about 4-5 minutes but speed is NOT important. Careful, clean guttin is everythihg for good BBQ.

I appreciate what tribe nuge stands for and am thinking of joining but as a fifth generation logger here in oregon I have to ask what the organizations stand is on sustainable timber harvest? Thanks

TNUSA policy supports the wise utilization of all of our natural resources, including the logging industry. TNUSA fully understands and appreciates that trees are renewable resources that should be utilized. As stewards of wildlife and other natural resources, TNUSA believes that only a dirty Grateful Dead fan would believe otherwise.

Hello Mr.Nugent, My name is Logan Hoppenrath and I recently read the article about the mystical flight of the arrow. I was wondering if you prefer a gun over a bow? I have been hunting for two years now and have never really heard anything about the bow, other than from my dad (he's never shot a deer with a bow). So I was wondering... Is the feeling of taking a deer down with a bow better than taking a deer down with a gun?

Good hearing from you Logan. I'm glad to hear you enjoy the great outdoors with your dad. Bow or gun, every moment beyond the pavement is good for us & very important for our environmental responsibilities to be hands-on conservationists. It's always at its best as a family. Firearms marksmanship is a great discipline for sure, but archery is quite a bit more difficult & therefor more gratifying when accomplished the best we can be. I encourage you to try the exciting bow &arrow fun as it will make you not only a better rifleman, but I believe a better student, athlete, son & American overall. Goodluck & keep me posted. Godbless you & yours, SpiritWild BloodBrothers, Ted Nugent
