Founded in 2004, the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes (CSAH) is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to help ease the crushing financial burden that often besets the families of servicemen and women severely wounded and disabled while serving in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom). CSAH delivers its mission through the following programs:
- Emergency Financial Aid – CSAH has provided over $22 million in direct financial assistance in more than 11,000 cases to severely wounded veterans and their families since 2004. CSAH provides emergency assistance to prevent foreclosure, meet, rent and utility payments, as well as food and non-covered medical expenses.
- Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute (R2RC) – An all-expense-paid event for severely wounded heroes and their families (more than 1,000 attendees since 2004), providing a break from the pain and routine of rehabilitation, the opportunity to learn about all of the programs and services available to them and a chance to meet with potential employers. New and renewed friendships are forged among the troops and their families, creating a support network to help each other cope with life’s new realities. CSAH hosts 150 heroes and their families at the Walt Disney World Swan Resort, in Orlando, FL, every December. Department of Defense and the VA are key partners for this event.
- Family Support Network – CSAH has provided personal computers, organized holiday parties, paid airfare for families to visit loved ones in the hospital and brought troops and their families to various sporting and cultural events.
- CSAH has given away more than $1.5 million in holiday gift checks to veterans and their families over the last four years, in partnership with corporate sponsors.
- Partner Appreciation Program – Trains spouses, parents, and veterans themselves in customer service and allows them to make phone calls to donors to share with them firsthand how their gift has made an impact. More than 150,000 contributors have been surprised by a cheerful “thank you” call from a family that has been helped by their generosity.
- Homes for Heroes – Since December 2004, CSAH has built or refurbished homes totaling more than $1,500,000 to accommodate the special physical requirements of disabled veterans.
- Career Network – Discipline and commitment: two important qualities our heroes learn in the military that are invaluable to employers. CSAH partnerships make these programs possible:
- Career Counseling and Job Search Assistance – to help ease the transition from a military to a civilian career.
- Job Shadowing and Mentoring – connecting heroes with local and national employers for information about career opportunities, one-to-one mentoring and job shadowing.
- Online training – through Skillsoft, the world’s leading e-learning company, more than 1,500 courses in business, information technology, and desktop skills are offered.
- Entrepreneurial Boot Camp for Veterans – a cutting-edge entrepreneurship/small business management training program for severely injured veterans at Syracuse University, Florida State University, Texas A&M University and UCLA. CSAH helps to recruit and place candidates into the program.
- Career Fair at R2RC.
