Attendance good, despite wet weather

Ted Nugent brought out the fans for this year's Fond du Lac County Fair.
About 45,000 people attended the 159th Fair, held July 20-25 at the County Fairgrounds on Martin Avenue. Fair Manager Matt Immel said it's an impressive figure, considering how much it rained during this year's event.
Saturday recorded the highest attendance of any day, with 15,000 people passing through the gates. Immel said Ted Nugent drew the big crowd; his concert sold 700 VIP tickets. The fair normally sells 600 VIP tickets at $15 apiece, but there was enough demand to add more seats.
VIP tickets also were sold for other Grandstand concerts. Billy Currington filled 400 VIP seats, and Neal McCoy had 200, he said.
It's a stark contrast to the year prior, when the Fair sold fewer than 500 VIP tickets total for the entire event. Immel attributed this year's uptick in sales to more awareness. This was the second year the fair had offered VIP seating. It may have taken time for people to find out about it, he explained.
"We really haven't received any negative comments (about VIP tickets)," he said.
Thursday was the slowest day of the fair, he said. Torrential downpours dampened the grounds all day, but the fair went on as planned.
"It was heartening to see how everyone pulled together on the day it rained," he said.
The storm clouds went away by Sunday. Unfortunately, the sun returned with hot temperatures. The grandstand filled, though, for both demolition derbies. Immel said there were two demo derbies this year to make sure all the spectators had seats. The fair had received complaints about inadequate seating.
The fair had to charge $5 for the demo derbies. Immel said the charge was necessary to "cover our expenses." He said it cost more to put on two demo derbies.
Attendance for the demo derbies Sunday wasn't available. Immel said there's no way to compare this year's contest to last year's event, since last year's admission was free. The fair hadn't charged admission to grandstand events for years.
