Last month, Attorney General Mike Cox filed lawsuit with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to close shipping canals near Chicago, after Asian carp DNA was confirmed on the Lake Michigan side of an electric barrier to keep them out of the Great Lakes.
Cox has asked Nugent to lend his voice--literally--to educational Public Service Announcements to bring awareness and visibility to this urgent situation. Families can visit StopAsianCarp.com and join us as we fight to protect the Great Lakes and thousands of jobs from the biological threat of known as Asian carp," Cox said in a press release. "If we don't protect the lakes today, we won't have another chance tomorrow.
The Great Lakes states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York have joined Cox in the suit that is specifically against the state of Illinois, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Proponents say the Asian carp pose a threat to the region's $7 billion fishing industry.
"It is distressing that inaction on the part of a state with only a few miles of shoreline is threatening the economy and ecology of Michigan and every other state in the Great Lakes basin," said Cox, who references the 800,000 Michigan jobs connected to the health of the Lakes.
The new PSA's are slated to air statewide. Nugent has been named one of the Top 25 Most Influential by Outdoor Life Magazine. Ted was honored in the Leaders Category, "who by their individual efforts and sheer strength of will have had the strongest impact on the hunting and fishing scene." Nugent has also been named Michigan Conservationist of the Year.
