Ted's guitar licks are as prominent as ever, as evidenced on such standouts as the album-opening "Tied Up in Love." on this album, the follow-up to, Nugent . British singer Brian Howe (Bad Company) replaced Derek St. Holmes on vocals on this album and the sound of the time steps in with a little more keyboard than one would expect from the extreme rocker.

The Nuge continues on the same musical path, forgoing his earlier caveman rock in favor of pop-metal. The same year this album was initially released fans were treated to a cameo appearance on the TV show Miami Vice. The unruly title track is one of Ted's known '80s songs, classic music with a classic video!

Derek St. Holmes Ted's original singer and rhythm guitarist was welcomed his back into the fold after a four year absence for the Nuge's debut recording. This album sparked a musical change for Nugent, as he spent the remainder of the '80s reinventing and honing his style as pop-metal, keeping the pace with rock acts he influenced such as; Van Halen and Motley Crue. The Motor City Madman thrashes his trademark Gibson Byrdland guitars with axe-man expertise while rhythm guitarist Charlie Huhn and drummer/producer Cliff Davies occasionally pick up vocal duties.

Released the year after the smash hit, Cat Scratch Fever, Weekend Warriors confirmed Ted as a "guitar hero". From the Rolling Stone review: "Nugent makes heavy metal sound exactly like it's supposed to: like a motorcycle gang who's come to take your daughter away."

 

Detroit's Ted "the Nuge" Nugent is one of rock's greatest anomalies. Following his run with the Amboy Dukes, Nugent hit the peak of his fame in the mid-1970s playing a high-octane brand of screaming arena rock and putting on one of the most over-the-top stage shows ever. Yet in decidedly un-rock-&-roll fashion, Nugent has always been an avid outdoorsman, stridently opposed to drug use, and fiercely conservative in his politics. Love him or hate him, he's the one, the only, the Nuge.

This is a great compilation CD that brings together the first three mainstream albums by this seminal Detroit band and Ted's beginnings. Amboy Dukes, which combined psychedelia with loud guitar to create a unique sound. Nuge in early liner notes, explained that he "didn't know what those opium pipes were on the album cover," tracks like "Journey to the Center of the Mind" and "Colors" hint at a newfound awareness. These tracks as well as the cover of Them's "Baby Please Don't Go" were hits for the band. Nugent has always gotten high through his hunting, a habit that is the obvious inspiration for three songs on this record. Nugent's guitar licks are inventive and exciting, evident on the soulful yet 'heavy-metal' soloing for which Nugent would later become famous. This CD is an excellent companion piece to Nugent's '70s material-with qualities that earmark Ted's early work.

This is the last Nugent album to feature singer/rhythm guitarist Derek St. Holmes, who was a major musical contributor to Ted's solo success. This recording is a consistently riveting listen from beginning to end, solidifying the success as an arena-headliner.

The two compact disc release is from Epic Records released in 1990 and the single compact disc version released in 2006 is available as a special edition from Rock Candy.

One of Ted Nugent's more underrated albums, 1979's State of Shock closed a decade in which Nugent took his caveman persona to the top of the charts. It also proved to be one of the last albums the Nuge would issue for some time that resembled the raw and unrefined rock of his mid-'70s heyday.

In the next decade he would attempt to break the pop-metal market, both solo and as a member of the all-star outfit Damn Yankees. The best-known track remains the gonzo album opener "Paralyzed", which would turn up again a year later on his Great Gonzos collection, while other highlights include "Saddle Sore" and "Alone".
